Mineral times (TD)

Slow beat

A pulsing heart in the middle of Africa: the highest mountain of the Sahara, the Emi Koussi, silently rises up as a mineral fortress in a sea of sand, its deeply lined slopes telling the mountain’s long life of 70 million years.

In these profound furrows teems a small human presence sui generis, as elusive as its various names: Tubu, Toubou, Tibu, Tebu, Tebou, Todga, Todaga, Toda, Tuda, Umbararo, Tudaga, …
Red Saharans by colour of skin, atavistically adapted to the desert, warriors with an incredible resistance to running and thirst, survivors of a mankind preceding the camel.

Not by chance that the main subsistence activity of this people is the extraction of natron, the same salt used by the ancient Egyptians to preserve human remains.
