Refugium (SA)

White and blue

An Arab cloak and headcloth accentuated the fair complexion and blue eyes of TE Lawrence, the Lawrence of Arabia who joined the Great Arab Revolt of 1916-1918 in the hills above Yanbu’ al Bahr.

White are the sandy shores laying on the blue waters of the Red Sea, offering at this location crystal clear visibility on pristine coral reefs that make this holy region of Saudi Arabia a potential Mecca for divers as well as for pilgrims.

But protection measures need to be taken now before refineries, petrochemical plants and growing tourism – on land – and ocean acidification and coral bleaching – at sea – interfere destructively with the 2500 years history of the quaint old town and the northern Red Sea section, deemed a coral reef refugium from climate change.
