Plissé (pleats) factory (BS)

A transparent paradise

Boasting the clearest waters on the planet, the Islas de la Bajamar (shallow sea islands) – as Cristoforo Colombo first called them when he reached San Salvador on 12 October 1492 – are 700 islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of tropical ocean.

One of the most well-known pirates coves in 17th and 18th centuries, they are nowadays a touristic and fiscal paradise chosen as premises by a considerable number of offshore companies.

Who knows how many secrets are hidden in the pleats of the submerged carbonate platforms that make up most of the archipelago, built of limestone accumulated perhaps since the Jurassic era, thanks to joint – factory – work of the sedimentary environment, intervening organisms and precipitation processes.
